Monkey nursery in Abkhazia
February 23, 2012 Founded in Sukhum in 1927, it is still popular among adults and children. But few people know that the Sukhumi monkey nursery is not just a zoo, it is a research center, thanks to which no scientific discoveries were made in the last century.
Here, scientists have conducted and are conducting research on primates, thanks to which it is possible to create, for example, new vaccines for diseases. The full name of the nursery is as follows: research Institute of experimental pathology and therapy of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia. The monkey nursery is located on the slope of the Trapezium mountain. This is one of the most popular attractions in Sukhum.
Initially, about fifteen monkeys were purchased in Guinea to create this nursery, but many of them did not survive transportation. Therefore, the Abkhazian nursery had to start its work with four individuals: two chimpanzees and baboons-Anubis.
Over the many years of its work, the research Institute of experimental pathology and therapy has achieved considerable results: a vaccine was invented for typhoid, syphilis, plague and brain diseases.
Already in the early 90’s, about three thousand individuals lived in the territory of the monkey nursery of Abkhazia. During the Georgian-Abkhazian war, many individuals died, some were unable to give birth to offspring or gave birth to dead cubs.
